Chronic Prurigo / Prurigo nodularis: A challenging chronic inflammatory skin disease

 

Chronic Prurigo / Prurigo nodularis (PN) is more than just itching. This chronic skin disease is characterized by severely itchy nodules and is a considerable burden for those affected. The causes are complex and include neuronal and immunological factors. Despite advances, there is still a great need for education, effective therapies and improved patient care. World Prurigo Day on June 21, 2025 is a global initiative with a clear goal: to raise awareness of chronic Prurigo / Prurigo nodularis, advance research and accelerate the development of new therapies. We bring together leading dermatologists, researchers and patients.

What to expect: A global online event with parallel live events in numerous countries (including Italy, Spain, France, India, USA - more to follow). Experts will present the latest research findings and therapeutic approaches in the respective national language. All sessions will take place in the same time zone to enable a global exchange.

The initiators

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Sonja Ständer is Professor of Dermatology and Clinical Neurodermatology at the University of Münster and directs the Center for Chronic Pruritus (KCP) at the University Hospital Münster. As an internationally renowned expert in the field of chronic itching (chronic Prurigo / Prurigo nodularis), she integrates translational research with patient-centered care. She is the initiator and president of numerous expert committees, including the International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI), and is a co-author of landmark clinical studies and guidelines. Her scientific work has received multiple awards and significantly influences modern pruritus research.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Matthias Augustin is board-certified in Dermatology and Venereology, holds certification in Allergology, and serves as Professor of Health Economics and Quality of Life Research. As Director of the Institute for Health Services Research in Dermatology and Nursing (IVDP) at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, 1 he is recognized as one of the leading experts in evidence-based dermatology, health services research, and digital medicine. With over 800 scientific publications and numerous awards, he has significantly shaped the national and international research landscape in dermatology, quality of life research, and health economics for decades.
